African Cultural Alliance Statement of Purpose

The African Cultural Alliance is a cultural awareness organization based in the heart of Nashville, Tennessee. The Alliance was founded in May of 1983 by several concerned African American people in the Nashville community who wanted to promote the positive aspects of African culture. The primary concern of the African Cultural Alliance is to enhance the awareness of the cultural and historical background of people of African descent, while providing various outlets in which we ourselves can take part in demonstrating our culture to others. The African Cultural Alliance embraces the definition of culture as:

Culture is all material and immaterial things that a people manifest in order to survive, adapt, control and flourish in their environment.

As our contribution to our African Culture the members of the African Cultural Alliance intend to:

  • Promote positive values in African culture and education
  • Promote dignity and creativity in African world affairs
  • Define and promote aspects of the African personality
  • Promote a vehicle for African culture and develop the ability of African people to advance their holistic well-being through positive motivation

Through theatrics, music, history, poetry, and dance, we intend to educate our children, as well as others, about our African heritage that has been continuously denied in this country. We feel strongly that the need for positive motivation and understanding of our African culture will in return help us all to know who we are, where we came from and where it is we must go from here!
